A loop of the Lincoln Doppler radar imagery from early this morning shows an example of a roost ring northwest of Mattoon. A roost ring is caused when a flock of birds take off near sunrise, and are in a dense enough concentration to be seen on radar. The expanding ring reflects the birds moving further away as the loop progresses, to the point where they are too diffuse to still be seen on radar.
